Utagawa Kuniyoshi (歌川 国芳) 1797 – 1861

Kintaro Attacking a Bear Cub, circa 1837 - 1838
Fantastic Kuniyoshi triptych depicting the young boy Kintaro attacking a black bear cub with an enormous ax, sending the animal tumbling over a cliff toward the rushing river below. His mother, the wild woman Yamauba, stands at left, a monkey sitting at her feet. The warrior Genji Tsuna watches Kintaro from the opposite bank at right, waving his fan, his bow in his other hand. Geese fly through the sky and a couple of monkeys point to the scene from a cliff in the center.
